SlashdotMiner is an example Orchestr8
AlchemyPoint MashUp. This example is one of hundreds that could be running simultaneously on an
AlchemyPoint server.
Slashdot is a community news website that allows users to comment on stories that are posted; typical stories may have several hundred or more comments, each of which can be rated from -1 to +5 by other members of the community. These ratings indicate the "value" of a comment to other site users. Slashdot comments often contain useful information regarding news stories including related links, etc. This
MashUp is designed to continually watch any Slashdot story a user reads, looking for comments that contain useful links and other information. The
MashUp then republishes any information it has found to the shared bookmarking site
http://del.icio.us/ and an
AlchemyPoint-hosted
RSS feed.
The "SlashdotMiner"
MashUp is a
ProxyService that examines web content as it flows from the Internet to a user's browser, detecting whenever a user reads a Slashdot story.
The service then continually attracts the Slashdot story over the next 48 hours, looking for any user comments that have been moderated +4 or +5 and labeled "Informative".
Such stories have been identified by the Slashdot community as containing useful informative data. This
MashUp then analyzes any "informative" comments looking for outbound weblinks. Comments with links are then posted to the shared bookmarking site
http://del.icio.us/ and an
AlchemyPoint-hosted
RSS feed.
In the above screenshot it should be noted that web-links also incorporate textual information taken from the associated Slashdot comment (to serve as a link description), and if the Slashdot story has been "tagged" by the community with topic keywords this information is also utilized To categorize the web-link.
If a user clicks on a comment link extracted from a Slashdot story they are taken to the information this
MashUp has deemed relevant and useful to the original story:
