MashUps are an exciting genre of interactive Web applications that draw upon content retrieved from external data sources to create entirely new and innovative services. They are a hallmark of the second generation of Web applications informally known as Web 2.0.

A MashUp is a website or Web 2.0 application that uses content from more than one source to create a completely new service. Much the way blogs revolutionised online publishing, mashups are revolutionizing web development by allowing anyone to combine existing data from sources like Amazon.com, eBay, Google, Strikeiron, Windows Live and Yahoo! in innovative ways.

Examples of MashUps built using AlchemyPoint include:

  • - PopupPoliticians - Integrates the Pop-up Politicians widget from Sunlight Labs into news websites, showing voting records and other information within news articles.
  • - SlashdotMiner - Mines slashdot comments for interesting links, and posts them on the social bookmarking website del.icio.us
  • - BrowserActMon - Hooks into the users raw HTTP datastream, gathering statistics and charting activity data.
  • - YPGoogleEdia - Mashes up Yahoo's yp.yahoo.com business search, Wikipedia, and Google into a single search page.
  • - MapInserter - Extracts a street address from a portion of a webpage, uses the Yahoo Map API to retrieve a map, and inserts it into the website.
  • - NewsSummarizer - Utilizes a Text Summarization API to condense full-length news articles into single-paragraph summaries.
  • - RelatedWiki - Uses the Yahoo Term Extraction API to detect 'key topics' in selected webpage content, then inserts related Wikipedia entry links into the webpage.
  • - RelatedImg - Uses the Yahoo Term Extraction API to detect 'key topics' in selected webpage content, then inserts related Images into the webpage (retrieved using the Yahoo Image Search API).
  • - WebTransl8 - Uses Google Translate to convert a Spanish-language news website into English.
  • - RelatedNews - Uses the Yahoo Term Extraction API to detect 'key topics' in selected webpage content, then inserts related News articles into the webpage (retrieved using the Findory News API).
